A group of seven alleged individuals of German far-left organization stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
