European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal news:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to cut security grants to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the action was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
